Take a look at this floating home in Sausalito, CA. You’d probably never guess what it used to be.
“It was a World War II landing craft,” explains listing agent Michele Affronte, with Engel & Völkers Sausalito. “In Sausalito, during the war, they built landing crafts; and this one was dragged over some time in the 1960s and then remodeled into a floating home.”
Reimagined as a cozy, boho-style dwelling, this charmer is on the market for $730,000—$20,000 less than its initial list price.

New updates blended with vintage charm
“None of the floating homes can be driven, and that’s one of the stipulations with having a floating-home marina,” Affronte says. “They have to be stable and tied in four places, and they float up and down with the tide.”
This is the second time Affronte has listed this home—she sold it to the current owner about two years ago.
The owner “bought it and did quite a number of things to renovate it, but she still kept the old charm with all the beautiful wood,” Affronte says. “When she bought all the new appliances, she made sure to buy vintage ones, so it looks really cool.”
Inside, the space has one lofted bedroom, a bathroom, a living and kitchen area, and a flex space in the back.
“It could be a living room, or it could be a second bedroom,” Affronte says. “It’s sort of a lounging room with pillows everywhere, beautiful drapery, and windows that open up and look out on the dock.”

“The concrete barges on floating homes are big concrete tubs that float, so if you go down the stairs into the concrete barge, you can see the original wooden hull in there,” Affronte says.

There is a deck attached to the home and more leisure space on the nearby dock. And if you like to be out on the water, this is the perfect spot to launch your watercraft.
“You could easily have kayaks or even a motorboat and take it straight out to the main lagoon in less than two minutes,” Affronte says, adding that there is convenient, land-based car parking near the home.
While small, the home has everything someone might need for full-time living or to lease the place out as a rental—as long as the term is 30 days or longer, Affronte notes.
“Someone could live there so happily,” she muses. “The charm is so amazing.”
